Curriculum for Wales

This is an exciting time for the young people of Wales. A new Curriculum for Wales is under way which will inspire the learners' enthusiasm from 3 to 16, giving them the foundation they need to succeed in a changing world.

The Four Purposes

The purpose of curriculum is to enable learners to develop as:

  • ambitious, capable learners who are prepared to learn throughout their lives
  • enterprising, creative contributors that are ready to play a full part in life and work
  • ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world
  • healthy, confident individuals, ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society

The learning and experience fields

The following six fields of learning and experience (Field/Fields) must be reflected in the adopted curriculum.

  • The Expressive Arts
  • Health and Well-being
  • The Humanities
  • Languages, Literacy and Communication
  • Mathematics and Numeracy
  • Science and Technology

Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Competency skills will be taught across all Learning and Experience Fields.

Compulsory elements of the curriculum

In addition to the above, the following are compulsory elements of the curriculum.

  • Religion, values and morals
  • Relationships and sexuality education
  • Welsh
  • English
