What is Growth mindset?
Growth mindset is a way to develop resilience and to develop a mindset of seeing failure and mistakes as an opportunity to learn. An ethos of growth mindset is being strongly and firmly developed at Ysgol Rhosgadfan across the learning years.
At Ysgol Rhosgadfan we have recognised 8 learning muscles that the children can exercise to 'grow' their brains.
- PERSEVERANCE
- FOCUSING
- KEEP IMPROVING
- COLLABORATION
- USING IMAGINATION
- ENJOY LEARNING
- BE INQUISITIVE
- GIVE IT A GO
Lessons
We teach 1 Growth Mindset lesson per week following ideas from the Shirley Clarke book.
Buddies
The teachers will change buddies regularly. This means that there are opportunities for children to co-work with different individuals. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses and working with a partner means that everyone can learn from each other.
Excellent mistakes
Each classroom has a 'Camgymeriadau Campus’ (Excellent Mistakes) wall where teachers and pupils discuss mistakes that come up whilst marking work. It is an excellent opportunity for pupils to see that mistakes are something we should celebrate in order to move forward and improve. At Ysgol Rhosgadfan, we celebrate mistakes. Mistakes are part of learning and developing.
Choosing a challenge
As part of being able to improve the children's mindsets, it is important that they are able to recognise which work is challenging enough for them. It is important that children don't spend too much time in their comfortable learning zone as it doesn't extend them mentally. Different challenge levels are represented by different colours at our school: The most challenging activity is red, then orange and then green.
